Summer Garden, Harting

by: Garman, Theodore
Collection: Garman Ryan
tags: plants, architecture
The house in this painting is Vine Cottage, belonging to Theodore's grandmother in South Harting, Hampshire. Between the years 1939-1946, Theodore and his sister Esther moved here to escape the portending peril of World War Two. Theo flourished during this period; immersing himself in the agricultural way of life, he took up work as a farmer, became a conscientious objector and attended a painting class in his spare time. Vine cottage became an inspiration, and something of a safe-haven to Theodore and letters written home to his mother, at this time, reflect the joy and serenity that he felt. The lush greens in the painting, combined with the rich, vibrant red flowers, the colour of passion, perhaps represent the renewed sense of discovery and wonder that surrounded Garman. Dark, mottled blue flowers reach heavenward like vines and his grandmother's house peers out from behind an entangled meadow of colour, invoking feelings of endearment and nostalgia.
