Pub Stuff

We have just installed Yard Ape: a life size replica of a corner of a London pub by Colin Lowe, Sarah Lucas, and Roddy Thomson which arrived at the gallery last week as 45 separate packages! Having only been exhibited twice before, the work has been in storage in Norwich for six years but has come to life for our celebratory PARTY! exhibition.

After cleaning the walls of the bar (and its accompanying toilet and urinal) we assembled the familiar pub scene which is complete with a selection of drinks and an empty cigarette machine. Finally we decorated the bar with paraphernalia which includes bags of pickled cockles, archery trophies, a glass yard of ale, a board for chopping lemons, and a toy ostrich along with many other bits and pieces.

When Yard Ape originally arrived at the gallery we were a little overwhelmed by the size of it (including walls, toilets and many boxes labelled “Pub Stuff”…) but after spending two days cleaning it and putting it together I think that we’ve all secretly fallen in love with its British charm!

Epstein Invented the Robot

Preparations for PARTY! have kicked off this week in style with a visit from Bob and Roberta Smith who is installing his work in the window box at the front of the gallery.

I started interning at the New Art Gallery this week and have spent the last couple of days helping Bob to make this enormous work by cutting out hundreds of letters and arrows of all shapes, sizes and colours while Bob has been filling the space with music, drinks, people and disco lights.

Bob’s piece is the first to be installed for the 10th birthday exhibition, showing off some of his work with Neil Lebeter and the Epstein Archive. Come and look at the new window box display – it has to be seen to be believed! Under the eager eyes of the Epstein family, come and look through the peep holes in the window to see what goes on behind the scenes in a party where everyone’s invited – from Jacob Epstein to the men that actually built the gallery….
