Save this date!!

Dear friends,

In February 2010, The New Art Gallery Walsall celebrates its tenth birthday with the exhibition ‘Party!’

To celebrate this momentous occasion, The New Art Gallery Walsall would like to invite you, friends and family to come and celebrate with the gallery team on:

Thursday 11 February 2010, 4pm – 9pm so please Save the Date in your diary.

Come early at 4pm to see Bob and Roberta Smith, our artist in residence, presenting his research and findings to date on the Epstein Archive and The Garman Ryan Collection and listen to him and his band perform later on that night followed by Gavin Turk playing some of his favourite tunes!! That’s a good lineup isn’t it??!!

Party! is an exhibition designed to celebrate ten years of achievement and features over 40 participating artists. The exhibition will contain a consciously eclectic selection of artists, mostly contemporary, though some modern and historic works will also appear. The party theme extends across music, song and dance, performance, bar culture, food and drink, dress and decorations. Amongst the air of celebration, there will lurk darker undercurrents and a more sinister edge!

Also, as part of the 10th Anniversary Celebrations, Birthday cards created by artists who have shown at the New Art Gallery over the past 10 years will be shown in the Garman Ryan Galleries.

It has been an amazing ten years and I really hope you are able to celebrate with us and we have included some details for hotels should you wish to stay over.

We look forward to seeing you all!

Stephen Snoddy
Director

Last chance to see ARCHIVE, a portable collection of artists’ books curated by Chris Taylor and John McDowall. It’s on display in the Art Library until 5 December.

Alongside is a display of collages by art and design students at Dudley College, made in response to the books on display in the ARCHIVE cabinet.

Artwork of the Month: Hélène Binet

The latest Artwork of the Month is Hélène Binet’s Untitled black & white photograph of the interior of The New Art Gallery. The photograph was taken in 1998 during the construction of the Gallery, showing the concrete which still shows around much of the building before any other elements were added. Pop into the Art Library to find out more…

Lucienne Cole- The Band?

The Senior Citizen's Swing Band, Forest Arts Centre

Meet The boys!

These lads , some of whom have been playing together for over tweny years, have still got what it takes. I was kindly allowed to sit in on a rehearsal. During the tea break I was promptly told to bear in mind everything being played was from first sighting i.e they had not played before, ” we are much better than  this normally”. Well I was impressed and was welcomed warmly.

Im sure I recognised The Saturday Night Stomp?

Theo & “One Man’s Battle with The Art Establishment”

There has been a tremendous amount of activity in the Epstein Archive over the past few weeks. Bob has been up a fair bit in the last fortnight and has created a tremendous amount of work inspired by the archive. Firstly is his sculpture of Theodore Garman, which was made last week. We made a film following the sculpture’s progress and Bob talks a little about his thinking behind it.

I must admit that I find the Theo sculpture a little terrifying and it featured heavily in a rather bizarre dream I had the other night.

Secondly, Bob made a minature theatre for a film we made last week. This play, titled “One Man’s Battle with The Art Establishment”, is a light hearted look at the life of Jacob Epstein and was tremendous fun to make.  It is in two parts, so be sure to watch both!

The gallery’s Youtube channel is filling up with all the short films that Bob and I have been making over the last few months. We feel that this is an exciting and different way of getting people interested in archives.

Last but not least, we visited Walsall College last week to give a talk to one of the art classes. We showed some of the videos we have been making and took along some objects from the archive. It was really great to take the archive to the people and they seemed to enjoy the visit as much as we did.

Nose Casting Workshop – The Library of Secrets

Hello Library of Secrets fans, and we know there are quite a lot of you out there!

Here some photos from last Saturday’s nose casting workshop, the third and last of the events delivered by artist, Serena Korda, as part of the Library of Secrets residency at the gallery.

Epstein was an active campaigner against The British Museum’s restoration of their antique marble statues’ missing body parts using plaster. Our visitors had their nose cast and helped the gallery create a new archive of fragments which will be on display from tomorrow onwards.
